The market offers an almost unmanageable variety of plastics for a wide variety of applications. Even experts sometimes lose track of the overview.
To make the overview a little easier for you, we have divided the plastics into four groups:
The so-called high-performance plastics are primarily engineering plastics, i.e. polymers that distinguish by their mechanical, electrical and thermal properties. They satisfy less visual or haptic requirements but are designed for purely technical applications.
The distinction between high-performance plastics and engineering plastics is usually based on the continuous service temperature. Engineering thermoplastics can usually withstand up to good 130°C, corresponding thermosets can be used permanently up to 150°C. High-performance plastics, on the other hand, can withstand permanent temperatures of over 150°C . From this point of view, these materials could therefore also be called high-temperature plastics.
However, these materials can do much more than just withstand high operating temperatures. Some also withstand cryogenic conditions with temperatures below minus 200°C, others show a high resistance against chemicals, radioactive radiation or other environmental influences. High-performance plastics can be extremely wear-resistant, high-purity or particularly electrically insulating.

Engineering plastics are polymers that are characterized by their mechanical, electrical and thermal properties. They satisfy less optical or haptic requirements but are intended for purely technical applications.
Engineering thermoplastics can usually withstand temperatures up to a good 130°C, corresponding thermosets, like the laminated press materials can be used permanently up to 150°C . They are characterized by especially high strength, good toughness and damping properties as well as (as a rule) good processability and a well-balanced cost-benefit ratio.
Engineering plastics are used for all kinds of applications. Thus bearings, rollers and wheels or seals as well as structural components, insulators or housing and workpiece holder are made of these materials.

The so-called standard plastics are produced in large quantities worldwide. They are mainly used in mass applications in the packaging and consumer goods industry and primarily satisfy visual requirements. Their mechanical properties fall significantly behind those of engineering plastics.
Nevertheless, the standard plastics sometimes have special properties that make them also predestine for special technical applications. In particular, the high chemical resistance of polyolefins (PE, PP), the good insulation properties of polyvinyl chloride (PVC), the high optical transparency of acrylic glass (PMMA) and the good price-performance ratio of styrenic plastics (PS, ABS ...) lead to the use of these standard plastics in typical technical applications.
Components made of standard plastics can be found e.g. in pipeline or tank construction, in mechanically low-loaded wear applications, for covers and housings or in electrical insulation applications - to name just a few areas of application.

The designation "special plastics" is just like the designation high-performance plastics not precisely delineated and is often used from a purely marketing point of view.
Under the heading of special plastics, we group together polymer materials that have "unusual" properties for plastics or that are uniquely suited to certain applications and can only be used there in a reasonable way. This means that other plastics mentioned elsewhere - in modified form - may also be listed under special plastics.
POLYTRON Kunststofftechnik offers the following special plastics:
- plastics for magnetic field concentration (MDM)
- plastics for high frequency applications
- porous plastics for sliding and pressure applications
- defined electrostatic dissipative (ESD) plastics
- biocompatible plastics for medical, biotechnology and pharmaceutical engineering
