ACRYLIC GLASS
Acrylic glass (PMMA)
The term acrylic glass or sometimes also Plexiglas® is generally used to refer to the plastic polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA).
PMMA is an amorphous thermoplastic of the highest optical quality. The transparency and light transmission of PMMA is approximately comparable to that of glass. The plastic also has a high strength and hardness. But at the same time the material is relatively sensitive to impact or breakage, and only conditionally resistant to chemicals. Therefore PMMA is used in particular for components which maximum transparency is required.
In addition to injection moulding, PMMA is mainly processed as a semi-finished product. Similar to polyamides, semi-finished products can be extruded or cast. However, the cast semi-finished products have a higher light transmission and transparency and are significantly less stressed than extruded ones.
Main features
- highest transparency
- best optical quality
- heat deflection temperature approx. 100°C
As standard, semi-finished products and components made of acrylic glass are offered in two different qualities:
In addition, there are - depending on minimum quantities - different, on the surface textured or colored PMMA grades.
