SELECTION OF SUITABLE MATERIALS
Selection of suitable materials
There are specially modified plastics for tribological use. The generally good tribological properties of plastics can be improved by adding certain reinforcing or solid lubricants.
The load capacity limits limiting the use of plastic plain bearings are in principle determined by the pressure load and the bearing temperature occurring during use!
For smaller or extremely slow or infrequent movements, the maximum permissible surface pressure or the compressive strength of the plastics can be assumed as bearing limit load. At higher running speeds, the product of mechanical load or pressure (p) and running speed (v), the so-called pxv value, determines the load capacity of the plastic slide bearings.
In addition to pressure and running speed, however, other factors, usually application specific, also influence the selection of suitable bearing materials.
Various publications with tables and graphics often give the impression that it is only possible to select a suitable plain bearing plastic on the basis of pressure and speed and, if necessary, the operating temperature. But in reality, the choice of material is much more complex.
The influencing factors in tribological systems are manifold and often not transferable or comparable. A correct choice of material therefore always requires a comprehensive application analysis!
We are happy to offer you this service. Our experienced application engineers will suggest the most suitable plastic for your application based on the analysis. Please contact us!
