LIMITS OF THE LOAD-BEARING CAPACITY
Limits of the load-bearing capacity
The limit value of the sliding bearing load is assumed to be the product of pressure (p) and speed (v) - p x v value - at which the plastic shows excessive wear, melting of the running surface or crack or hole formation.
At relatively low p x v-values, most plastics show only slight, hardly increasing wear in the test, but if the product is increased, a rapidly increasing wear will occur from a certain height. This point designates the p x v limit value.
In borderline cases, the p x v value alone is no longer sufficient for material selection. Applications with high sliding speeds but low pressure loads can lead to different wear values for the same product (p x v value) than the opposite case with high pressure and low speed.
At high speeds, a particularly high frictional heat may be generated, which may only be resisted by particularly temperature-resistant and tribologically optimised high-performance plastics such as Torlon® or Vespel®.
In such cases, only a detailed application analysis can lead to a well-founded material selection! Just contact us!
