requirements placed on plastics for food contact applications
The use of plastics in food and packaging technology machinery is regulated by a large number of national and international laws and standards. In particular, if the plastic comes or can come into direct contact with the corresponding foodstuff, as a rule only certain materials classified as harmless or compatible may be used.
The use of plastics in contact with food is regulated, among others, by
- in Europe, Regulation (EU) No 10/2011 in conjunction with Regulation (EC) 1935/2004, and
- in the USA, the recommendations of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
In addition to these legal requirements for the use of plastics in contact with food, there are a large number of other regulations for specific areas of application, especially for use within the sphere of influence of the USA.
