Electrically conductive plastics
Carbon in the form of carbon black or graphite is usually used to give plastics antistatic properties. The abrasion of these carbon-modified materials is thus conductive and may contaminate the process.
Conductivity can also be produced by adding carbon fibres. Carbon fibres do not only increase the conductivity but also the material strength. Since they are usually firmly embedded in the material, their contamination effect is less than with carbon black or graphite. Nevertheless, there is a fundamental risk of contamination.
By adding conductive microfibres, hydrophilic polymers or other inherently conductive materials, permanent static dissipative properties (ESD) can be generated, which represent a significantly lower risk of contamination. These additives are also much more resistant to abrasion and are therefore preferred for applications in the electrical industry or semiconductor production. POLYTRON has a series of high-performance plastics which are modified accordingly and are therefore particularly suitable for use in the examination or testing of semiconductors and other electronic components.
