CELAZOLE® (PBI)

Celazole® (PBI)

Polybenzimidazole (PBI) is an amorphous condensation polyimide with extreme temperature resistance which has been introduced to the market under the name Celazole®.

For short periods, PBI can withstand temperatures above 500°C. In oxygen-rich atmosphere, however, thermal oxidative decomposition already begins above 300°C, so that it can only be permanently exposed to even higher temperatures in the absence of oxygen. Due to its molecular structure, PBI does not become melt-flowable even after exceeding the glass transition temperature.

Celazole® has exceptionally good mechanical properties over the entire temperature application range. It shows a high mechanical strength and a very good wear resistance in dynamic applications. In addition, Celazole® has excellent plasma and radiation resistance. A disadvantage, however, is the high moisture absorption of up to 14%.

Due to the relatively high costs and the difficult processability the use of Celazole® only makes sense in applications in which particular attention is paid to the extraordinary temperature resistance of the material. Because of the limited range of application, only an unfilled standard Celazole® grade is available
