SEALS AND SEALING ELEMENTS
Bellows seals
Another special form of dynamic sealing is the so-called bellows. Primarily axial movements are sealed with bellows.
Both pointed notched and round shaped bellows are used. Although the pointed notched bellows offer greater extensibility and flexibility, they are much more notch-sensitive due to their design and are therefore only suitable for lower pressure.
Due to their shape, only relatively tough plastics that are not very notch-sensitive can be used as bellows. Modified or reinforced plastics can therefore not be used. In addition to fluoroplastics with their comparatively high ductility, unfilled polyaryletherketones, and rarely also polyacetals, are mainly used. For high loads, bellows made of Victrex® PEEK™ in particular have proven to be very effective.
